Water in the crawl space isn't a good thing. Many homeowners wonder why it is such a big deal to get the water out of their home as soon as possible when they call us over for a free estimate. Water has a way of ruining things. In certain scenarios, it could take years and even decades for the damage to compound, but here in Savannah with the heat and the humidity, mold can appear almost overnight.
When you have a would, whether its something as simple as a cut or something as major as a deep tissue wound, it has to be properly cleaned out first to ever have a chance at healing. We've all dealt with that stubborn infected cut that refuses to ever go away. We pick at it, scratch it, try and dry it out, and still it refuses to leave. In frustration, we pick at it some more and repeat the process over and over. A lot of times the problem is that the wound hasn't been properly cleaned of infections and bacteria and it is delaying the healing process. There is no better comparison to a crawl space encapsulation procedure. If you try and save money and do a DIY crawlspace repair and try and lay down a vapor barrier without first dealing with the moisture issue, you are only creating more work for yourself down the road. You are simply covering the infected wound with a bandaid and rest assured it will not be going anywhere until it is cleaned (water is removed). The first step in the encapsulation and repair process is to remove all the moisture that is in the crawlspace. Sounds like a fun job doesn't it? All jokes aside, this step is absolutely necessary and it has to be done first. As crawlspace repair contractors our very first move is to get in and get out the moisture. A lot of the homes we deal with have a fair amount of water sitting in the crawl space. If the home has an existing sump pump, it's a relatively easy job. If this is the case, it is simply a matter of digging a trench from where the standing water is to the sump pump and filling the trench with some perforated pipe. As soon as you start digging the trench, the suction from the water will immediately be gone and the water will start flowing toward the sump pump. If you've never even been in your crawlspace, and there is no sump pump, this procedure is going to be a bit more challenging. The most important part is to start with the end in mind. If you don't have a plan for everything, you are going to waste a lot of time and resources. Again going back to the DIY jobs that we have been called on to fix, it is common to see a homeowner that has done a DIY crawl space encapsulation job and has forgotten to repair the damage with the end in mind. Just because the water is gone temporarily, doesn't mean it's gone forever. People that try and save money by not installing a dehumidifier or getting a cheap vapor barrier, don't realize that they will end up costing themselves in the end. |
